Mark Zuckerberg Undergoes Surgery for Martial Arts-Related Knee Injury
On Friday, Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta Platforms Inc., revealed on Instagram that he had recently undergone surgery to mend a torn knee ligament that he had sustained during a mixed martial arts session.
“Torn my ACL sparring and just got out of surgery to replace it,” Zuckerberg captioned a post of a series of photos of himself in a hospital bed, knee bandaged and braces. The CEO, 39, said he plans to continue training for a “competitive MMA fight early next year.”
The founder of Facebook, the social media company that changed its name to Meta, is known for setting the company’s overall strategy and being closely involved in efforts such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality and metaverses.
Zuckerberg took up MMA during the pandemic. Since then, his participation has gone beyond casual as he has built an octagonal fighting ring in his backyard. A month ago, the CEO posted a photo of himself with two black eyes and a bruised nose, noting that “the sparring got a little out of hand.”
The meta spends handsomely to protect its CEO outside of the combat ring. According to a regulatory filing in February, the company planned to increase the tax it spends on Zuckerberg’s personal security to $14 million this year, up from $10 million a year. That amount does not include other security costs the company collects on Zuckerberg’s behalf.
